HOW TO APPLY
There are two ways to apply for an absentee ballot
- Must apply yourself
- Must be applied for by a family member
A “family member” is defined as:a spouse of person
residing in the same household, in-laws, father, mother, sister
or brother of the whole or half blood, son, daughter, adopting
parent or adopted child, stepparent or stepchild, uncle, aunt,
niece, nephew, grandparent or grandchild.
- Applications should be mailed or hand delivered to the applicants’ City/Town
Clerk or Election Commission.
- The application must be in writing and it must have your signature.
- In addition to a signature the application should also have
the following information:
- Name
- Address as registered
- Ward and precinct (if you know them)
- Address where you wish the absentee ballot sent
- In a primary, the party ballot you want
- Your signature (as mentioned earlier)
- The office of the Secretary of State provides a standard absentee
ballot application in the event that you wish to use a standardized
form. If one chooses they may mail the application to the
Secretary of State’s office but since that would take longer
it is recommended that applicants mail their applications directly
to their City/Town Clerks’ office or Election Commission.
QUICK FACTS
- You may apply for an absentee ballot at anytime but the actual
ballot will not be at the local City/Town Clerks’ office
or Election Commission until roughly mid to late August. The
office of the Secretary of State will make the ballots available
as soon as possible but there is no exact date that the absentee
ballots will be made available.
- Once the ballots are available people may go to the City/Town
Clerks’ office or Election Commission and both apply and
vote at the same time prior to the election.
- If you are mailing or hand delivering your absentee ballot
it must be received by the local City/Town Clerks’ office
or Election Commission before 8 PM on September 19th.
