Deb Goldberg is running for Lieutenant Governor because she wants to help
get Massachusetts moving again. Deb is the fifth generation of her family to
live here. Her background and experience are just what we need to grow our
economy and address the many challenges we face here in Massachusetts.
Deb grew up in the company her family founded, Stop & Shop, one of New
England’s largest grocery chains. She learned firsthand how to build
a business in a challenging environment. Even with a small 1% profit margin,
they still managed to give high quality health insurance to all employees—full-timers
and even part-timers. As Lieutenant Governor, Deb will focus on expanding economic
opportunities and working with the business community to create and keep jobs
in Massachusetts.
The key to jobs is education. Deb believes we need to invest in our schools
to make sure our kids have the skills they need to make them and Massachusetts
competitive in the biotech and life science industries. We also need to solve
the healthcare crisis, and Deb will help ensure everyone in Massachusetts has
access to affordable, quality healthcare.
Deb graduated from the Brookline Public Schools and received her B.A. from
Boston University in 1975. After working in the retail sector for five years,
she earned her law degree from Boston College Law School in 1983 and her M.B.A
from Harvard Business School in 1985. She returned to the retail business and
then devoted her energies to non-profits, her family, and public service.
Deb used her private sector experience effectively in the public sector during
her six years on the Board of Selectmen in Brookline, a community of almost
60,000 people. As Chairman, she was responsible for a $190 million budget and
during tough economic times avoided lay-offs and cuts in important services
without any costly property tax overrides. Under her leadership, Brookline
maintained a strong financial position and even added police and firefighters
every year during the down years. She also implemented key public health, environmental,
and affordable housing programs and helped support small businesses and develop
Brookline’s commercial areas.
Deb has been actively involved with numerous philanthropic activities, including:
Adoptions With Love, The Grow Clinic, The 100 Club, Planned Parenthood League
of MA, Brookline Music School, The Center for Adult Lifelong Learning, and
Combined Jewish Philanthropies. Deb Goldberg lives in Brookline with her husband,
Michael Winter, and their two teenaged children, Evan and Meredith.
